3-hour or 6-hour course?

3-hour Mandatory Education Course

If you are a renewing California notary public and your current commission expires on or after July 1, 2009, you are eligible to complete the the 3-hour mandatory eduation course if you have an on-time renewal. To have an "on-time renewal" you must do the following:
  1. Take and pass the state exam prior to the expiration of your current term.
  2. Complete the 3-hour course prior to the exam and submit your proof of completion certificate at the time of the exam.
You must complete these requirements before your current commission expires. If you complete the 3-hour course and pass the exam even one day after your current commission expires, you will be required to take another 6-hour course and submit the proof of completion certificate to the Secretary of State before your new commission will be issued.

6-hour Mandatory Education Course

  1. All new notaries public must complete the 6-hour mandatory education course.
  2. Renewing notaries who complete the mandatory education and/or pass the exam after their current commission expires must retake the 6-hour mandatory education course.
Renewing notaries who meet the criteria for an "on-time renewal" may elect to complete either the 3-hour or the 6-hour course. Six-hour courses always fulfill the mandatory education requirement for new or renewing notaries.

What's the difference?
Our 3-hour and 6-hour are essentially the same. All have the same study material. All cover the information you need to know to pass the California notary public exam.

The difference is that the 3-hour courses do not require you to complete as many quizzes as the 6-hour courses require.

Our Special Offer for Renewing Notaries:
If you complete any one of our 3-hour courses (live, online or self-study) and then fail to meet the "on-time renewal" criteria, you may re-take our 6-hour online notary course for free.
